China is a vast country. When planning to travel around it, one must be careful about packing. Here are 8 useful tips for packing when cruising on the Yangtze River:
1. Luggage Weight:
- For international flights with economy class tickets in China, usually each passenger can carry luggage under 23KG, and for domestic flights, it's only 20KG (more with seat upgrades). Excess weight incurs a significant charge.
- There's no weight limit on cruise ships. You'll have a baggage rack in your room.
2. Footwear:
- Cruise itineraries involve much walking. Pack a pair of well-worn, hard-soled and comfortable shoes. New shoes may need time to break in.
3. Clothing:
- The weather on the Yangtze River cruise can change rapidly. Bring a warm cardigan, a small umbrella or waterproof jacket.
- For the Captain's Welcome Party, formal wear is required (jacket for gentlemen, dress or skirt for ladies), but smart casual is also acceptable.
4. Electrical Items:
- There is an amount USD25pp/cruise which regards as a mandatory one-off service charge for passengers who will take the cruise along the Yangtze River. And to ensure that it would be benefited to the crew who will provide services to you onboard as well as good at the sustainable development of the Yangtze cruise industry.
5. Health Precautions:
- Regarding malaria precautions/medicines for a Yangtze cruise, consult your general practitioner for the latest information.
6. Toiletries:
- Don't forget your favorite toiletries and sunscreen. Cabins have soap, toothpaste and bottled water. Use bottled water for teeth cleaning instead of tap water.
7. Cash:
- Prepare cash for port sightseeing. In remote areas of China, local farmers or craft makers may sell products but not accept cards.
8. Bargaining:
- When shopping, haggle. Initial prices are often high. Make a ridiculously low counteroffer. Bartering is common and can be fun.
