What to pack when cruising on the Yangtze River?
China is a huge country. If you are planning to travel around China, you need to be prudent with what to pack.
10 useful tips of what to pack when cruising on the Yangtze River:
In China, if you book an economy class ticket, international flights usually allow every passenger to carry luggage below 23 kg, and domestic flights allow only 20 kg per passenger (the luggage limit is higher with seat upgrades). If your luggage is over 20 kg, the checking staff will be very quick to charge you, and you need to pay a considerable amount of money.
There is no weight limit for luggage on cruise ship, and you will have a baggage rack in your room. If you have a large and heavy suitcase, you can hire porters to send your bags from the port to your room on the ship. There will be a charge for this service.
The cruise itineraries are very port-intensive, so passengers need to prepare for walking, and pack a pair of hard-soled, comfortable and well-used shoes. If you pack new ones, you would take time to adjust them .
While cruising on the Yangtze River, the weather can change quickly. Please take a warm cardigan and a small umbrella or waterproof jacket. If you are restricted with your weight luggage or forgot to pack some small items, do not worry as you can always buy them on the ship.
For the Captain’s Welcome Party, every passengers should wear formally. Gentlemen would be required to wear a jacket and ladies would be required to wear a dress or skirt. However, you can wear smart casual.
Please take along a plug adapter. Electricity on all our ships is 220 volts and 110 volts in the bathroom. The wattage may not be compatible with your hair dryer. If you forget to bring your adapter, you don’t have to worry as video cameras, digital cameras and other electrical appliances can be recharged at the front desk.
One question often asked is malaria precautions/medicines should be taken for a Yangtze Cruise? The best advice we can give is to talk to your GP who have up-to-date information and can act accordingly.
Do not forget to pack your favorite toiletries and sunscreen. In the cabin, you can find soap and toothpaste with bottled water. You can wash your teeth with bottled water without drinking tap water.
Please prepare some cash with you when going out for port sightseeing. You are in a remote part of China where you will meet some local farmers or craft makers who are willing to sell you their products but they do not have cards.
When you see something you want to buy, Haggle! Because the first price is ridiculously high. Normally, you can provide a counter offer with a ridiculously low one. Barter and don’t feel embarrassed! It’s fun!
